Confluence against Gun Violence Leads Effort To Oppose The NRA

Organizer Says NRA Leadership Promotes Violence, Racism, and Bigotry

For Immediate Release

PITTSBURGH/EWORLDWIRE/April 7, 2004 --- The Confluence Against Gun Violence, a coalition of Pittsburgh organizations, is mobilizing to oppose the National Rifle Association (NRA) leadership and its annual convention and gun show which will be held in Pittsburgh on April 16-18. The Confluence will sponsor broad-based educational events during this period, including a teach-in, a candlelight vigil, and a rally and concert.

According to Nathaniel Glosser, president of the Rosenberg Institute for Peace & Justice and lead Confluence organizer, this is likely to be the largest protest the NRA has encountered at its annual conventions for many years. "Pittsburgh is going to say 'no' to the NRA, 'no' to its policies which promote violence, and 'no' to the hate and bigotry the NRA leadership spreads." said Glosser.

Confluence organizers expect the NRA to announce a revamp of its ill-fated plan from last year's annual convention: NRAsafe. When originally announced, NRAsafe was planned as a website to connect NRA members in any particular community who would then band together in neighborhood watches, presumably armed watches, to prevent terrorism, according the NRA. The plan never came to fruition. Glosser explains that was possibly due in part to the criticism leveled against the NRA that NRAsafe watches sounded very much like vigilante militias. A brief flash presentation at the revamped NRAsafe.com shows SARS information coupled with elevated terrorism alerts from the Department of Homeland Security, even though SARS has never been linked to terrorism. "This is further evidence that the NRA will go to any length to increase the culture of fear in the United States in order to create a broader market for the gun industry's products." Glosser said.
