E-World Recyclers Promotes Responsible Recycling Practices

    For Immediate Release

VISTA, Calif./EWORLDWIRE/Nov. 3, 2008 --- Earlier this year, E-World Recyclers acted as a field test facility for the new "Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices for Use in Accredited Certification Programs for Electronics Recyclers." E-World Recyclers participated in a multi-stakeholder coalition of federal and state governments, electronics manufacturers, recyclers, trade associations and public interest groups to develop the guidelines. The purpose of the R2 document is to provide a set of practical procedures for electronics recyclers that can be audited which will ensure safer and more environmentally sound recycling practices.

E-World Recyclers, a California-based electronics recycler, was one of several locations across the nation chosen to implement these practices on a trial basis. The field test included carrying out the various processes specified in the R2 protocol, and submitting to a sample audit. Both E-World Recyclers and the auditor then provided the stakeholder group with evaluations and suggestions for improvement. "It's not an option for any of us in this industry to act irresponsibly when managing this material," says Cindy Erie, president of E-World Recyclers. "The R2 guidelines are comprehensive yet practical and provide us with an excellent tool for proper environmental management of used electronics."

The next step for this workgroup will be focused on implementation and establishing a certification process. An R2 certified recycler will be expected to ensure worker safety, promote reuse and recovery of electronic components, reduce emissions during recycling operations, and obtain assurances from their downstream vendors regarding the disposal and export of materials.

"There should be no doubt that choosing to reuse or recycle used electronics is the right choice for our environment," said Susan Parker Bodine, assistant administrator for the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. "These voluntary guidelines will help assure Americans that their used electronics will be recycled safely and responsibly."
