Claes Nobel Featured Speaker at Special Scholar Event and college fair at The Carter Center in Atlanta, at 1:00 p.m. in the Cecil B. Day Chapel

ATLANTA/EWORLDWIRE/Dec. 4, 2009 --- Governor Sonny Perdue has declared Dec. 5, 2009, The National Society of High School Scholars Day in honor of a special Scholar Event and college fair being held that day at The Carter Center in Atlanta. This occasion honors outstanding high school student members from across the United States and educators from Georgia.

The theme of the event is "Learn, Lead, Change the World," and the featured speaker is Claes Nobel, senior member of the Nobel family which established the Nobel Prizes, and Chair of the NSHSS Advisory Board. Other notable speakers include Di Yerbury, President Emeritus of Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, and Richard O'Kennedy, vice president for Learning Innovation at Dublin City University in Ireland. Senator Isakson's office will also offer remarks, and President Carter has sent a congratulatory letter to the NSHSS members.

NSHSS Student Council member Shelby Smith, Wellesley College freshman from Sacramento, California, will address the group. Smith is a Claes Nobel Academic Scholarship recipient and top scholar who has been highly recognized for her "Lights for Literacy" community service initiative.

The program also will include of a panel discussion with college admissions representatives from Yale University, Princeton University, Emory University, Purdue University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Indiana University, Louisiana State University, The University of Georgia, Miami University, National University of Singapore, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and Bocconi University (Milan). The panel discussion will be moderated by Nancy Beane, college counselor at Westminster High School in Atlanta. After the program, students will have the opportunity to meet and speak directly with these college representatives.

During the program, "AHANA," Emory's acclaimed acapella singing group, will perform.

The event will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the Cecil B. Day Chapel at The Carter Presidential Center.

"What our members are doing in their schools and in their hometowns is truly admirable, and each of them highlights the hope and the confidence we all should have in our young people."

The National Society of High School Scholars was formed in 2002 to recognize academic excellence at the high school level and to encourage members of the organization to apply their unique talents, vision and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world. Currently, the NSHSS has members in the United States and 180 countries representing 22,000 high schools and has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships.
