Curator Selected 31 Artworks from Submissions Worldwide

NEW YORK/EWORLDWIRE/Jan. 3, 2011 --- Hope and Light - In the afternoon quiet, the library of the Salmagundi Club in New York City is a great place to look at art. Barebrush guest curator Joyce Pommer, owner and director of Franklin 54 Gallery, carefully selected the 31 artworks to launch 2011.

The result: An international calendar art show, unique to Barebrush, with one artwork for each day of January.

The artwork for January: photography, painting, drawing, mixed media by artists local to New York as well as those from further afield - Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, California, Mexico, Panama, England and Australia.

Three artworks have earned retirement, having now been in three calendars, selected by three different guest curators. Eight pieces are making their second appearance in a Barebrush calendar display, and 20 are appearing in the calendars for the first time.

Ms. Pommer commented on the five pieces she selected as Curators Choice nominees. She was intrigued by the playing with light in "Sunrise, Discarded" by Joseph Mays. "The light across the body is an interesting visual effect," she stated. Pommer also admired "December Night" by Robin Kappy, saying, "This is really just beautiful - the mood from the soft technique fits the mood of the figure." About "We Two" by Michael Seif, Pommer noted, "The water figures have a very interesting energy. It becomes abstractive." For "Regal Maria" by Jean Marcellino, Ms. Pommer noted, "She named it perfectly - it is a regal portrait. The pose is very stately." Ms. Pommer selected "Sunday Rebecca" by Bill Teitsworth, NWS, as Jan. 1, 2011, launching the year in the spirit of hope and light. "She is adorable," Ms. Pommer mused. "The painting is lush, the light is beautiful, it all fits together." Then she continued, "She has so much hope and light about her, which we could use ..."

Charles Wang, 25 Mollie Kellogg, 26 Mary Ann Martinez, 27 Geoffrey Stein, 28 Cynthia Angeles, 29 Gene Azzam, 30 Alex Knowlton, 31 Ilene Skeen.

Each of the artists selected for the calendar receives two (2) complimentary listings. Five artists, indicated by asterisks (*), are nominated for the Curators' Choice Awards. Curators' Choice nominees receive eight additional complimentary listings. The top three artists receive additional prizes. Barebrush.com members and the public can also vote for "My Favorite N*de," the poll which includes all of the art in the calendar. Winners announced February 1.
