CLEVELAND/EWORLDWIRE/March 4, 2011 --- Health Legacy of Cleveland (HLC) announces the Fifth Award and Scholarship Dinner to be held at the InterContinental Hotel & Conference Center in Cleveland. The event reflects the organization's mission to promote diversity in medicine and dentistry through partnerships within the Cleveland community.

Former Congressman Louis Stokes will receive the Health Legacy Award for Excellence. His work in the area of health led to his appointment as a member of the Pepper Commission on Comprehensive Health Care, and he was the founder and chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain trust. Following his service in Congress, he became senior counsel at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P., a global law firm, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, Case Western Reserve University. He has served as vice chairman of the PEW Environmental Health Commission at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and was appointed by former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shall as chairman of the Advisory Committee on Minority Health. He also chaired the Advisory Committee to the Health Disparities Committee of the Joint Center on Economic and Political Studies.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., will speak on Transforming America's Health Professions. Dr. Sullivan is chairman of the board of the National Health Museum in Atlanta, Ga., whose goal is to improve the health of Americans by enhancing health literacy and advancing healthy behaviors. He also is chairman of the Washington, D.C.-based Sullivan Alliance to Transform America's Health Professions. He was the founding dean and first president of Morehouse School of Medicine and is now President Emeritus. He served as chair of the President's Commission on Historically Black Colleges and Universities from 2002-2009,and was co-chair of the President's Commission on HIV and AIDS from 2001-2006.

The Cleveland Clinic is the event's presenting partner and grantor of a $100,000 gift in 2009, which HLC hopes to match through similar donations. In addition, the Cleveland Clinic has collaborated with HLC for the M.D./Ph.D. Project: The Charles R. Drew Saturday Academy, supporting Under Represented Minorities in Medicine (URMM) including African American, Hispanic, Pacific Islander and Native American high school students in Cleveland who demonstrate an aptitude for a career in medicine. Over the past four years, the Academy has provided Saturday sessions for over 120 URMM high school students to support their development to become physicians, dentists, research scientists and physician investigators and return to the greater Cleveland area to practice.

Individual seating for the dinner begins at $150. Corporate sponsorships begin at $1,500 and are available for company tables, student seating, scholarships and programming in education or diversity. Online event registration and scholarship applications are available online at HealthLegacyCleveland.org (http://www.healthlegacycleveland.org).
